Double tungstate crystals are optically biaxial and their optical properties have to be described within the frame of optical indicatrix axes (Np, Nm, and Ng). Advantages of Tm-doped KYW crystals include a broad fluorescence band, a large emission cross-section, and a relatively low upper-level lifetime. Such properties combination of properties is very promising for the generation of femtosecond pulses in solid-state laser systems.
