Yttrium aluminate doped with Yb3+, (Yb3+YAP) is a biaxial orthorhombic crystal. YAP crystal hardness and thermal conductivity are similar to YAG but exhibits a highly anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient and is birefringent. Emission wavelengths are polarized, while emission and absorption cross-sections are strongly dependent upon the crystallographic orientation. The absorption cross-sections of the Yb:YAP crystal is higher than that of the Yb:YAG crystal.
