Yb3+:YAB is one of the few representatives with multifunctional properties: as a negative uniaxial crystal, it also possesses nonlinear optical properties, permitting a direct conversion of the infrared radiation to the visible through second order nonlinear processes. High concentrations of Yb3+ ions can be included in the YAB crystal matrix with little concentration quenching. Yb:YAB crystals feature good mechanical strength, good thermal conductivity, and stable chemical characteristics.
